The small town of Wykoff holds a cool little slice of history. They Wykoff Jail Haus was built in the center of town in the late 1800’s and operated as a jail holding cell until 1960. The City of Wykoff decided to restore the small brick building in the 1990’s and made it into a small B&B. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but it’s a pleasant surprise inside this quirky little Airbnb site. If became available to rent via Airbnb in 2019 and is still going strong!
You can find the Airbnb listing HERE.
Video Tour
The Jail Haus
The Jail Haus Airbnb sleeps four people. You’ll find a queen sized bed in one room and a bunk bed in the other room (inside the gated jail cell). If you’ve got little kids (or you move a lot in your sleep), just be aware that the top bunk doesn’t have a railing. I ended up putting the top bunk mattress on the floor because I was worried one of the boys was going to roll right off of it in the night.
It has a bathroom with a shower, TV, microwave Keurig coffee maker (that is well stocked with coffee, hot chocolate & creamer), mini fridge and WIFI. There is off street parking available right next to the building. As far as Airbnb places go, this one was clean, comfy and had everything we needed!
Side Note: It’s a bit ironic for me to sleep in a jail since I used to work in a women’s prison!
Town of Wykoff
Wykoff is about two hours south of the Twin Cities. Although it’s one of those ‘blink and you may miss it’ towns, there are a few interesting local attractions nearby to keep you busy.
Mystery Cave
Details of our Mystery Cave visit will be in an upcoming post (Link to article will be posted soon)
Forrestville/Mystery Cave State Park,
The actual state park is in a separate location from the cave, only a few minutes away. At the state park, you can hike, camp and visit the remains of the abandoned town, Forrestville. There will be more info about the State Park in my Mystery Cave post. Check out the DNR website HERE.
Niagara Cave
We didn’t have time to tour this cave in Harmony, MN but I heard it’s fantastic and even has a waterfall inside of it! Check out the cave’s website HERE.
Ed’s Museum, Wykoff
We were really bummed to miss out on Ed’s Museum. It looked fascinating, bizarre and a tad creepy. It has limited opening hours (Sat & Sun 1-4pm) but if you find yourself in Wykoff during that time, check it out!
A & W (with the giant Papa Burger), Spring Valley
The A & W is a great drive-in lunch spot that’s close to Wykoff and Mystery Cave.
The Pizza Place, Spring Valley
This was a delicious dinner spot not far from Wykoff! Bonus that they had some old style arcade games upstairs, my boys loved that!
Ghost Sightings
Now the big question is whether we experienced any ghost sightings in the jail? You’ll just have to stay overnight in the Jail Haus and find out for yourself! 😉
Would you sleep in the Jail Haus? Comment below and let me know!
Have done it with my cousin. My parents (Alfred and Dolores Schroeder spent the night there with Emory and Almeda Eickhoff when it first opened.
That’s great Su! What a fun spot it is!
